Final Sound Project: Woods to Apartment

For my final sound project I decided to do a piece that goes from the woods to an apartment building/room. I had originally wanted to make the second part of my sequence a 'hellish' area, but the only fire I had a chance to record was an electric fireplace. That obviously does not suffice for Hell, so I switched locations, incorporating the electronic fire into an apartment location.

Final Project Concept

I'm not 100% sure if this idea will fly, or if I know exactly how I want to pull this off, but I want to create a soundscape that transitions from a forest at night into a 'hellish' atmosphere of sorts, filled with sounds of fire. I also want to use chimes in the piece. My uncle lives in a wooded area and he has these magnificent chimes that I would love to somehow include in the piece.

The forest area would obviously include tree and animal noises, but I'm not 100% sure what I want to do with the second half of the piece. I want to record fire, but also see if there are 'urban sounds' that could fit this obviously odd environment. I want to do something a bit experimental, but if the second place has to be a concrete real-life area, then I'll have to come up with something different for it.

Soundscape Revision

Here's a link to a slight revision I made to the soundscape, having had more time over the weekend to tinker with it.

Soundscape - A Snapshot of Cleveland... Wisconsin

For my soundscape project I decided to showcase my hometown Cleveland. You can listen to the composition here.

Sonic Snapshot Idea

I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not, but I would like to make a snapshot of a coffee shop. Part of me is worried that the space is too dominated by speech, but it doesn't have to be. If I were to 'place' the stagnant recording by a door, that way you get part of the outside as well, it could make for a dynamic snapshot. Traffic coming through on one end, the grumblings of a coffee roaster on the other.

I could be wrong though. As I come to think of it, I haven't had much experience being in coffee shops. I've noticed that the coffee shop on Alterra always seems to be noisy, and that's what sparked the idea. I cannot say I've ever tried to pinpoint the specific sounds though. I don't know. A place like that could work, but it also doesn't seem to inventive of an idea. Kinda the generic college kid thing to say.

As of now that's what I'm thinking, but it could change in time. Maybe a more rural area could be interesting.

Sound Walk - Milwaukee River

Part 1

What do I hear? Leaves in the wind, various water noises (hitting up against rock and land), distant traffic sounds, bird chirps. The car traffic is a constant, and is probably the lowest noise I hear. Bird chirps and the occasional car horn would make up the loudest. At one point and time a plane flew by over head, and that cluttered my hearing. The water splashes had a certain rhythm to it as well. I didn't notice if the wind changed that rhythm at all.

Part 2

I didn't have problems adjusting from the dominant sounds to the low frequency 'background sounds' and I think that was mainly because those background noises are a constant. I heard the 'airy low hum' of traffic, almost to the point of annoyance. Once I had to focus on other sounds I found myself having troubles. When you are not thinking about sound while walking you rarely notice the traffic sound, so to finally give it attention was a unique experience. An experience that my ears didn't want to let go of. Because I had trouble not noticing the traffic sounds I walked down the bike trail I was on and concentrated on my footsteps (lots of cool breaking noises when my feet hit twigs). After a while I was able to focus again, and really take in some of the ambient water and wind noises, and I think I may have heard a cricket at some point and time. The sound was tiny and didn't last long though.
